Fast Fashion - The T-Shirt Board Game
Friday November 15, 2024 1:45pm - 4:45pm MST
Do you know who made your T-shirt? Or how it was made? Checking the tag may not tell you enough to know if it was made ethically, or if it was made under exploitative working conditions. Here’s another question: What happens to it when you no longer want it?

In Fast Fashion: The T-shirt board game, players assume the role of T-shirts. Along the way, they discover the realities behind the fashion industry and its impact on people and planet. Players roll the dice to enter different pathways a T-shirt may take, like getting a tear, or being donated to a thrift store.

The board game was created for use in schools and other educational settings to help teachers and students learn more about—and take action on—sustainable fashion. It includes a focus on the Sustainable Development Goals such as Gender Equality, Decent Work & Economic Growth, and Climate Action, among others.

Players are asked to think beyond their fashion inspiration to uncover both helpful and hurtful realities of the fashion industry. One of the more important realities is where our clothes end up when we no longer want them. Spoiler alert—everything ends up in the dump!

Rather than leaving with the heaviness of the negative impacts of the fast fashion industry, players will finish the game with a sense of empowerment and positivity as they discover ways to take action in their own lives. In the game, the best place to be is in the Wear Cycle and each roll of the dice determines how long the player stays there, and how many Wear Tokens they receive. The more times a T-shirt is worn, the better! Everyone feels like a winner when a player can stay out of the dump as long as possible.

Environmental Stewardship: Inspiring Students with Hope for the Future
Friday November 15, 2024 3:30pm - 4:45pm MST
"Do your senior high students seem disengaged? Are they anxious for the future? Prepare and inspire them with hope in action. In the 2023-24 school year, we piloted an Environmental Stewardship 3-credit options course at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Academy in Canmore, Alberta. Students joined this options course out of a desire to make a positive change in their community. Students learned through outdoor hiking field trips and site visits about everything from human-wildlife coexistence and Indigenous relationship to place, to waste, water and energy systems.

In this experiential workshop, we are delighted to share our learnings from the pilot course! Together, we will test drive some of the activities and send you with inspiration to your classroom! Free access to the ENS activity guide is available here:

Friday November 15, 2024 3:30pm - 4:45pm MST
Teaching and leading is a remarkable journey, and an exchange can bring a wealth of insights to your practice. Learn how an exchange can inform your practice.

What does skill development look like in Germany and Spain?
How does Australia prepare their students for the workforce?

Take home fresh perspectives and put them to use your own school and system. Open the door and get out of your comfort zone, engage in critical conversations, and experience first-hand how your peers engage with best practices.

We will detail our short-term in-person exchanges, where you are hosted by your exchange partner for approximately ten days to observe their world, typically over your spring break or during summer. You then reciprocate by hosting your exchange partner. We also offer exciting virtual exchange opportunities, no travel required. Destinations for short-term exchanges include Australia, Spain, Germany, Mexico, Alberta Accredited International Schools, and Iceland (for school leaders). No language requirements to participate.

Design Challenge: Most PD doesn’t speak to CT teachers, let’s fix it
Saturday November 16, 2024 11:00am - 12:15pm MST
Teaching CTF/CTS courses is a balancing act. Educators must embody confidence in the skills they share with young minds while developing their professional and technical skills, often privately, and without collegial support. We can become academic silos in our schools. School-based PD sessions rarely speak directly to CTF/CTS audiences. Meanwhile, there is a need for progressive and systematic skills-based and pedagogical learning throughout a teacher’s career. For our growth and satisfaction, we need a supportive community of practice, networking, and relevant professional development. Warren Ferguson shares his academic research on teacher PD, and invites the audience into conversations about topics that matter to our community: How do we make PD relevant and useful for CTF/CTS teachers? How can we make our unique contributions to school-wide teaching and learning better known? What do principals really need to know about us, our identity, what we teach, and our various places of learning?
